What are the causes of cold sores and how can they be prevented and treated?

Cold sores are caused by a virus - herpes simplex type one. Many people get this from another family member or a close friend. Once a person has it, it can never be "cured" - but an episode may be shortened by using medicine in an ointment or in pills. Prevention seems to be a matter of good luck, plus never kissing a person with a cold sore.
