I had this really bad inner ear infection and I took all the antibiotics like I was told, but my ear is still plugged to the point that all sounds are muffled. Is this normal??
Dr. Tom Says:
Your ear is "plugged" for one of two reasons - the canal may be full of wax (doctor should have seen and fixed that when you were started on treatment); or, more likely, your eustachian tube isn't working right. It runs from the back of your throat out to your middle ear, the place where infections often happen - it's job is to equalize pressure on the two sides of your eardrum. When it isn't open and working right, your middle ear is more likely to get infected, and it will feel full, or "plugged". If you hold your nose and blow out your cheeks gently, you should hear and feel a popping sensation in both ears; sometimes this may actually make the plugged sensation go away. If it doesn't, you may have to go back to your doctor for help. And, by the way, the infection you had was in your "middle" ear, not your "inner" ear.
