Instructions for Schools Enrolling in the Healthy Kids Program (HKP)

To enroll in the Healthy Kids Program offered by the Wickenburg Healthcare Alliance (WHA),  you merely notify WHA and provide some basic information about your school.  Participation in the program is free, but a certain level of effort is required to enter and maintain the data about the school, its classes, and its teachers, students, and parents.  Step-by-step procedures are given below.

  1. Notify Wickenburg Healthcare Alliance that you want to enroll in HKP.  Include school name, principal’s name, and your website url, if you have one.  We will enter your information in the program database.  There is no charge to enroll.
  2. Designate one or more people to administer your connection to the HKP website in an e-mail to Wickenburg Healthcare Alliance  Include passwords for each of them and e-mail addresses, if they have e-mail.
  3. Have administrators go to www.wickenburghealth.net and click on the HKP item on the left menu.  The HKP Home Page will open.  Your school’s name will be in the list box on the page.
  4. Highlight the school name and the current school year in the other list box and click on the Next button.  Your HKP School Page will open
  5. Click on the Schools Login item on the left menu.  The School Administrator login page will open.
  6. Enter your name and password and click on the Log In button.  The School Program Administrator Page will open.  It contains a menu for all of the features available for you to use in managing your school’s information.
  7. Click on the appropriate menu items and enter information about the classes being taught in the current school year, the teachers, the students enrolled, and the parents of the students.  The order in which you make these data entries is not critical, in fact, you can switch back and forth among them during the data entry process.
  8. Click on the Class-Teacher Links, Class-Student Links, and Parent-Student Links menu items in turn, and enter the links required.  Each teacher must be linked to one or more classes, each student must be linked to a class; and each parent must be linked to one or more students.
  9. Click on the Edit School Page.  The Administration—School Page and HK Category Page will open.  You can enter or edit information as appropriate.  There are, at present, eleven categories in the HKP.  You must select an HK Category to give your students and teachers access to the resources available through HKP.  Selecting an HK Category puts the focus of the HKP materials for your whole school on that category.  From time to time, or at regular intervals you can change the category as may be desirable for your school.
  10. Steps 7, 8, and 9 must be repeated at the beginning of each school year and may be repeated at times during the school year for updating and otherwise editing the information.

Getting Started in the Healthy Kids Program

One of the first things to be done when getting started with the HKP is to determine your school’s baseline School Health Index (SHI).  The SHI, developed by the CDC in Atlanta, is a measure of your school’s performance to date on a number of key health factors.  Determining your baseline SHI enables you to measure your progress as you participate in the HKP.  Additional information about the SHI will be found on the School Program Administrator Page.

WHA has learned that having a Health Fair for the students in your school is a good way to get an HKP started at a school.  Information about organizing and conducting a Health Fair at your school will be found on your School Page.

Mentors

WHA recommends that mentors from upper classes be used to assist non-readers in Kindergarten and First or Second Grade. Otherwise non-readers will have difficulty in using some of the HKP website features. In a K-8 school, for example, Sixth Graders might mentor Kindergartners, Seventh Graders might mentor First Graders, and Eighth Graders might mentor Second Graders.
