Health Education

Healthy Kids (HK) is a program to improve the health and health literacy of students working at K-3, 4-8 and 9-12 grade levels in traditional and charter schools and students being home schooled. HK requires the cooperation of students, their teachers, their Visitors, and other mentors. It is offered without charge. Individuals may participate in whatever features they choose.

The Health Education Program is based on selection of one of 16 Parts and following a set of program links related to it. WHA supplies teaching materials and other program information for the program. WHA works closely with the students, their schools, their families and mentors.

The complete Health Education Program includes the following components for each selected program Part.

1. Reading The online version of the WHA Health Education Primer (HEP) pages relating to the selected Part are available for use by students as a reference text. Links to related HEP pages are provided.

3. Lesson--Activities-Conclusions Students can complete a mini-lesson combining an exercise period with learning about Diet and Nutrition.

4. Mathematics Students can learn to solve mathematics problems related to the selected Part.

5. Science Students can gain experience in conducting a science experiment (research) that relates to the Part.

10. Individual Health Projects Students may undertake one or more Individual Health Projects (IHP) based on a selected Part; the project contains an action plan requiring the students to do something to improve their health (or the health of their family or community), not just talk about it. The level of effort required for an IHP will vary according to the student’s age.

11. On Being Responsible Students are given suggestions as to how, in cooperation with their Visitors, they can become more responsible for their own health.

12. Healthcare Treatment Students can learn what healthcare professionals do that is related to the selected Part.

Flash Cards A word or phrase on the front of a card is defined or described in greater detail on the back of the card. Students can review the information online, on a side-by-side basis, and then can test themselves by having only the front of the cards visible. A simple click on the card enables them to see the information on the reverse.

Kids' Page This feature includes a Health Tip, Questions (from students) and Answers (from healthcare providers), Medical Stories and Experiences, and Jokes and Riddles. Students can participate by submitting questions, stories, and humor.
